Simply put, flexibility is the range of motion around a joint, the junction between two bones. Like aerobic endurance and muscle strength, flexibility provides the body with healthier function including having anti-aging benefits. As we age, muscles tighten and the range of motion in a joint becomes affected.  If  flexibility is reduced, it  can put a halt to active lifestyles and even hinder day-to-day, normal activities.   Simple motions we take for granted like reaching, bending, and sitting become difficult and painful.

Flexibility is just as important as cardio and strength training in overall wellness, especially when it comes to keeping your body injury-free and relaxed.  If any body part is placed under stress beyond its usual range of movement, muscles, tendons, and surrounding tissues can be strained or even torn.  Increasing  range of motion allows a body part to move further before an injury occurs.   In many cases it’s the most undervalued component of conditioning.

There are various fitness training programs such as stretching, Pilates, yoga and other mind/body activities that are extremely effective in increasing flexibility while also helping in reducing stress. Of course, a more flexible athlete is a more mobile athlete. It allows enhanced movement around the court or field with greater ease and dexterity. Don’t ignore this extremely important aspect of your fitness workouts.
