Work. Kids. Carpools. Housework. Soccer games. With everything that you do in the run of a day, it’s no wonder that by the time dinner time rolls around, the last thing you feel like doing is cooking. All too often, if you’re anything like most of us, you decide that you just can’t be bothered to cook, and either pick up the phone to order something, or jump in your car and head for the nearest drive-through. Sure, this is okay once in a while; everyone needs a nice treat now and again. But, too many of us are making a habit of doing this regularly, and we are not getting the nutrients we need.
It is actually quite easy to eat a healthy diet, no matter how busy you are. Here are some tips for eating healthy, no matter how busy you are:
Cook it slowly. This may sound like you are defeating the purpose, but slow cooking is great for busy people on the go. Get the ingredients ready the night before, and put them in the slow cooker before you leave for the day. When you get home, you’ll have a delicious meal ready and waiting for you. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
No time for breakfast? Keep a supply of whole grain bars on hand. These aren’t the ideal meal, but, they do contain most of the nutrients that you would get from a traditional breakfast, and you can take one on the go with you.
Keep healthy snacks at work. It is important to have mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks, so make sure you keep lots in your desk at work. There are all kinds of delicious snacks you can have that will keep for a long time, including nuts (unsalted are best), trail mix, protein bars and popcorn.
Get salads instead of burgers. If you are going to lunch with co-workers, order a salad or something else that is healthy instead of a burger and fries. This way, you will be getting the vegetables you need, without having to take the time to make a salad, which can really be a chore at times. If you really want that greasy food, add fried chicken strips to your salad.
So you see, it can be really easy to have a healthy, well-balanced diet, no matter how busy your lifestyle is. You really have no excuse not to eat healthily. Enjoy a burger once in a while, but don’t make fast food your main diet. You’ll feel a lot better when you eat healthily, and you’ll look better too.
