Heavy compound (multijoint) exercises are still the best way to build muscle. These exercises might not always be pretty to watch or comfortable to do, but they work. Some of the better ones include the bench press, military press, bent-over row, squat and deadlift.
Be weary when working with someone who suggests isolated exercises such as one-arm curls or lunges when you’re just starting out on a program. While these exercises have their place in a
training routine, they are not the most effective or efficient way to make progress for a beginner.
As long as you perform each
exercise with proper posture and good form, never trying to use more weight than you can handle, compound exercises are extremely effective and safe.
